Technology is The Modern Girl’s Best Friend. Women Choose Electronics Over Jewelry.

I came across a statistic in Wired Magazine that says 77 percent of women would prefer a new plasma TV to a diamond necklace. Amen sister! I totally agree.

The article reported that according to the Girls Gone Wired survey of 1,400 women and 700 men aged 15 to 49, conducted by market researcher TRU, when given the choice, women opt for tech items rather than luxury items like jewelry or vacations.

More interesting facts from the study further prove that women love their gadgets as much as men:

• 56 percent would opt for a new plasma TV over a weekend vacation in Florida
• 86 percent would prefer a new digital video camera to a pair of designer shoes
• Over the next five years women see themselves increasing their activities in six tech areas: digital cameras, cell phones, e-mail, camera phones, text messaging and instant messaging
• Women on average own 6.6 technology devices while men own 6.9
• Four out of every five women are comfortable using technology
• 46 percent of women do their own computer trouble-shooting

Since women are running neck and neck with men on technology ownership and savvy, it would be wise for tech product marketers to increase their focus on this growing target audience.

  2. Yes, we love our gadgets just as much as men do! But we love them in a different way and for different reasons.

Men tend to view technology as “toys.” Women want to engage with tech in a fun way too, but it has to be USEFUL as well. Tech that either solves a specific problem or enhances/streamlines our quality of life is the stuff we love & keep forever. It has to WORK WELL.

Please note that this has nothing to do with the color pink — another thing tech product marketers need to understand.

That’s right, Dell, I’m talkin’ to you! 😉

  3. Hey, diamond necklace? I am in to high tech in a big way – Bang & Olufsen, Lutron lighting controls, electric blinds, HD TV, Eclipse TD, Arcam – at my three lux apartments, but er, I might be tempted to select the diamonds 😉 Afterall, diamonds are forever… and a HDTV and Blu-ray needs to be replaced from time to time!
